How the Cursive Text Generator Works

The letters this page produces are not a font. They are individual Unicode characters that happen to be drawn in a script style, and understanding that difference explains everything else on this page — including why they work in an Instagram bio and why you should never put them in a heading.

They exist because of mathematics. When physicists write ℒ for a Lagrangian or ℱ for a Fourier transform, the script letterform is the meaning: a script ℒ and an upright L are different symbols, not the same symbol in different clothes. Plain-text formats like email and source code have no way to carry a font, so Unicode encoded the script alphabet as separate characters. Why This Cursive Does Not Actually Join Up

Look closely at the output and you will notice something: the letters do not connect. There are no joining strokes between them, no ligatures, nothing linking the end of one letter to the start of the next. It looks like slanted, decorative lettering rather than the flowing handwriting you probably pictured.

This disappoints a lot of people, and almost no tool that offers this style will tell you about it in advance. So, plainly: Unicode script characters cannot join up, and no generator can make them.

The reason is the purpose they were encoded for. These are mathematical symbols. In an equation, ℒ is a single self-contained object — it means a specific thing, and it is never part of a word. Joining it to whatever letter follows would be actively wrong, so the characters were designed as separate, unconnected shapes and every font draws them that way. Real cursive joins letters through contextual alternates: the font swaps in a different version of a letter depending on what sits either side of it. That machinery exists in font files, not in the characters themselves, and the moment you copy text out of a font and into a bio you leave it behind.

The Eleven Letters Unicode Borrowed From Somewhere Else

Switch the style selector to light script and type Hello. The output is ℋℯ𝓁𝓁ℴ — and three of those five letters are not from the same place as the other two.

Unicode 3.1 added the Mathematical Script alphabet in 2001, but it did not add all 52 letters. Eleven were skipped, because those particular script letters had already been encoded years earlier in a block called Letterlike Symbols, for use in physics and set theory. One of Unicode's founding rules is that the same abstract character is never encoded twice, so the eleven slots were deliberately left empty and remain empty permanently:

This is where most generators break. Walking the block arithmetically — take the letter, add an offset — lands on eleven code points that were never assigned to anything. Nothing renders them, because there is nothing to render, so the visitor gets a row of empty boxes in the middle of their name. If you have ever copied cursive text from a random site and found that your Es and Hs vanished, this is exactly what happened.

This tool substitutes the Letterlike originals, which is not a workaround — it is the correct spelling of those letters. But the substitutes were drawn twenty years earlier by different hands for a different purpose, and in many fonts they carry slightly different weight and proportions. In a word like ℋℯ𝓁𝓁ℴ that mismatch is visible if you look for it. It is a real limitation of the light style, not a bug in the conversion, and no amount of clever engineering removes it.

Why Bold Script Is the Default Here

The bold script alphabet has no holes. All 52 letters were added at once, in a single block, with nothing pre-existing to collide with — so every letter comes from one designer working to one specification.

That makes it the better choice for almost every real use, and it is why it is selected by default rather than the lighter style most sites lead with. A bio in bold script looks like one typeface. The same bio in light script looks like one typeface with eleven letters quietly imported from another. If your name happens to contain none of the borrowed eleven you will never notice; if it contains three, as "Hello" does, you might.

The light style is still worth having. It is noticeably thinner, and at small sizes on a phone the bold version can fill in and turn muddy, particularly against a dark background. Where Cursive Text Works, and Where It Quietly Breaks

Bios, usernames and display names

The main use, and it works. Instagram, TikTok, Discord and Twitter accept these characters in bios and display names. Worth knowing: each script letter is a single character for length limits, but it occupies four bytes rather than one, so a platform that counts bytes instead of characters will run out sooner than you expect.

A script bio makes you invisible to the platform's own search

This is the cost nobody mentions, and it is not about Google — it is about the app you are posting in.

Instagram, TikTok and every other platform index your bio as literal characters. When someone searches the app for john, the search runs against the letters j-o-h-n. Your bio says 𝒿𝑜𝒽𝓃, which is four entirely different code points. The match never happens. The same applies to your niche, your city and your business name: written in script, they stop being words the platform can find you by.

This matters most for exactly the people most likely to want script text — anyone using a bio to be discovered. A photographer whose bio reads 𝓅𝒽𝑜𝓉𝑜ℊ𝓇𝒶𝓅𝒽ℯ𝓇 does not appear in searches for photographers.

The practical fix is simple and costs you nothing: keep your keywords in plain text and use script only for decoration. A name, a tagline or a divider line in script, with the searchable words left alone, gets you the look without the disappearance.
